PROMOTING THE BENEFITS OF NEIGHBOURHOODS WITHOUT HIGH-RISES

Human Scale Urban Development is an internet network for those groups and individuals interested in promoting the concept of human scale in architecture and urban development, providing an opportunity to share ideas, experiences and resources.

Our Purpose

Although there presently are organizations and websites such as INTBAU (www.intbau.org), Preservenet (www.preservenet.com), and International Making Cities Livable (www.livablecities.org) that are promoting principles of human scale architecture in urban development, there are no sites that provide an opportunity for individuals and groups to dialogue with one another on this topic in an open forum type of setting. It is my hope that this network will provide such an opportunity.

Highrises are a mistake of the 20th century -- James Howard Kunstler

James Howard Kunstler is a leading opponent of urban sprawl especially in regards to how much energy is wasted as a result of people commuting long distances to go to and from work. In that regard, one might think that Kunstler would favour the construction of highrises because to some they are the antithesis of sprawl.
